Everything Lauren thought she knew about her childhood and her family seemed so certain and secure, but that ends on the occasion of her sixteenth birthday. Returning from an exile that had begun when she was and infant, she and the eight other heirs sent into exile, have to learn quickly about their new land, their heritage and history and find that they while the war that drove their parents to exile them, while over, had not ended their enemy’s lust for power nor removed his influence from the land.
They find themselves swept into the fight against another of the elder Sagi, Esab, who is subverted by the possession of a talisman of the Dels Sagi, the Black Sagi, who bore the curse of an ancestor that filled him with an all consuming desire for power and no reservations regarding the ruthless pursuit of it. Before very long they join a force of Elves in an attack on the stronghold of Esab, who has become obsessed with restoring the Dels Sagi, in an attempt to free seven elder Sagi from the Dels Sagi’s enthrallment.
The nine heirs along with one of the Sisters of Osdias, who had been the agents of sending the heirs into exile and their Temple of Osdias was their arrival point as they returned from their exiles. They discover the hiding place of the weapons that had helped stop the Dels Sagi and ended the Great War. They learn that the Dels Sagi was the cursed one and that Lauren is the blessed one, with the power to join and separate Sagi from their books of power and protection. She also has the power to restore the Dels Sagi, which might be the only way to free those enthralled by him and existing without purpose and without his will or their own will to motivate themselves.
They are swept up in the fight to stop Esab, free the enthralled Sagi and unravel the web of power and deceit and denial that pervade their homeland. They explore their world, have the power of their books bequeathed to them and find their friends, allies and enemies. They recover the sword and the dagger used to defeat the Dels Sagi and end the Great War. More battles must be fought and more secrets must be discovered as they take on their new lives and work to free those imprisoned and enthralled by the Dels Sagi and his servants. A couple of them even find love amid the struggles to survive and return peace to their homeland. After the restoration of the Dels Sagi, they are faced with the failure of their attempt to contain him. He will once again have power and bring a new war to the land. His power and his armies of orcs will threaten all the free peoples and force them to face things they had thought to deny.
